Overall Review: Intermittently, after powering down the card and ejecting it, it will cause a complete hard freeze (you know, where the black panic dialog drains onto the screen to tell you how to reset in half a dozen languages). You can just leave it in as a fixture w/o a hassle.
It fits so flush that you can just barely push it in enough to pop the card out. In the 2011 17", the card seats very firmly and can't be just yanked out. Pulling the eSATA cable out carelessly with this in the old MBP risks pulling this whole card out. It gets so hot it'll fire up the fans on the older 15" MBP without high CPU involvement. I assume it's a solid card, and it finally lets me use an external tank as a scratch disk. This is not a task that Apple's HFS+ file system really impresses anyone with, and I don't have an NTFS tank to compare. A huge folder of tiny files outperforms the drive on FW800 by a bit, but not a whole lot. Sequential data seems to max out eSATA specs-I've seen 240MBps sustained avg, which is probably representative of the hard drives' max performance. The eSATA plug holds a cable relatively securely, although I prefer only to use it when the laptop is not going to be moved around. It cannot be accidentally popped out while holding the laptop, so you can stick it in and forget about it. Pros: Fits absolutely flush in my 2011 MBP 17", sticks out 0.7mm from my old C2D MBP 15".
